Treatment of root perforations in dogs' teeth with Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) and Portland cement with and without calcium chloride.
Resumé en anglais
Several materials have been employed for sealing of perforations, and currently the Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) has been presenting good results. Because of the similarity between this material and the Portland cement, and considering the utilization of calcium chloride-based additives in civil construction, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the response of interradicular periodontal tissues of dogs’ teeth after perforation and sealing with ProRoot MTA, MTA-Angelus and white Portland cement, to which 10% calcium chloride was added or not. Four dogs aged 18 to 24 months were used, adding up to 36 teeth (maxillary and mandibular premolars), which were perforated with a STP 58 bur (2.15mm X 0.585mm) at lowspeed, on the cervical third of the mesial root towards the furcation. Perforations were immediately sealed with the materials investigated. After 90 days, the animals were killed by perfusion and the specimens were processed for microscopic analysis, for achievement of 5-µm thick sections involving the site of perforation and adjacent area. The results demonstrated new formation of mineralized tissue, with total or partial closure of the perforations, yet with inflammation, especially in teeth presenting overflow of sealing material. The Kruskall Wallis statistical test did not demonstrate any statistically significant difference between the materials investigated (p>0.05). All the materials with and without calcium chloride showed good response creating biological conditions that favored the repair in the root perforations and periodontal tissues.
