Abstract in English
Hearing is directly related to the oral language and interaction of the individual with the environment and their peers. Hearing access to speech sounds promotes learning, and through hearing a child can assign meanings to sounds perceived and consequently acquire oral language. The early diagnosis of hearing loss is essential for the development of hearing skills and oral language near to normal. These results require early intervention, with adaptation of electronic devices applied to the hearing, including cochlear implants, together with auditory stimulation and specialized speech therapy. Oral language is important for the adaptation of the implanted child in mainstream schools, since the information is transmitted orally by teachers. Upon the above, the present study indicates the opportunity to increase cochlear implant studies in children, expanding the study results on the academic performance of these children, interface area with the results of speech perception and oral language in children and adolescents with long term use of cochlear implant at mainstream schools. To characterize the academic performance and correlate this aspect with the oral language and speech perception, tests were performed to evaluate such skills in 17 children and adolescents using cochlear implants for more than five years entered between the 6th and 9th grades. All children and adolescents were assessed over their academic performance, speech perception and oral language through standardized protocols. At the spelling test, 47% were classified as average or better, while 62,5% had good reading comprehension. Only 11 (64,7%) subjects presented Hearing in Noise test HINT, score related to speech perception. Regarding oral language, it was possible to observe lower performance in vocabulary test (especially when classified with the school grade), speech comprehension and phonological working memory for nowords. In the correlation analysis, spelling and oral reading speed related moderately with phonological awareness, syntactic awareness and receptive vocabulary. There is a strong correlation between reading comprehension and syntactic awareness, and a moderate one with phonological awareness and receptive vocabulary. It was determined that children and adolescents with long-term use of cochlear implant are included in mainstream school with average academic performance, although presented a gap in the development of skills needed for academic success.
