Desde a sua disseminação a fotografia está presente na vida cotidiana das populações em geral, seja como forma de rememorar eventos marcantes, para registrar um indivíduo nos serviços de identificação pública ou para divulgar e ajudar a comercializar um novo produto. Para além de seus usos cotidianos, a fotografia foi apropriada pelas mentes criativas e afirmou se como um meio de expressão artística repleto de peculiaridades, o que levou à sua incorporação nas coleções dos museus de arte. Esta dissertação trata da fotografia como item constituinte dos acervos dos museus de arte e de sua disponibilização ao público por meio de websites. Para concretizar o estudo proposto é analisada a representação temática e descritiva da informação sobre as coleções fotográficas do Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand e do Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo disponível em seus websites. A metodologia empregada segue as propostas de análise de fotografias desenvolvidas por Miriam Paula Manini e Boris Kossoy. Para fundamentar a pesquisa são abordados o protagonismo da Ciência da Informação no que diz respeito ao universo informacional dos museus e à produção e difusão do conhecimento; a relação da fotografia com seu referente atrelada à problematização da representação fiel da realidade associada à imagem fotográfica; e a legitimação da fotografia nos museus de arte. Constata se que a reprodução digital de fotografias trouxe mudanças nos processos de representação, em especial a representação temática, já que os instrumentos de pesquisa disponíveis online passaram a contar com a possibilidade de visualização da imagem de tais obras.

Since its dissemination photography has been present in the daily life of populations in general, whether as a way to remember important events, to register an individual in public identification services, or to publicize and help commercialize a new product. In addition to its daily use purpose, photography was used by creative minds and established itself as a means of artistic expression full of peculiarities, which led to its incorporation into the collections of art museums. This dissertation deals with photography as a constituent object of the collections of art museums and its availability to the public through websites. To carry out the proposed study, the thematic and descriptive representation of information about the photographic collections of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand and the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo available on their websites is analyzed. The methodology employed follows the photography analysis proposals developed by Miriam Paula Manini and Boris Kossoy. To substantiate the research, the role of Information Science is addressed concerning the informational universe of museums and the production and dissemination of knowledge; the relationship of photography with its referent linked to the problematization of the faithful representation of reality associated with the photographic image; and the legitimation of photography in art museums. It turns out that the digital reproduction of photographs brought changes in the representation processes, especially the thematic representation, since the research instruments available online now have the possibility of viewing the image of such works.
