Abstract in English
This work was dedicated to investigating the issues of time and music, in the context of the 20th and 21st centuries. According to the French thinker Giséle Brelet (1915-973) from the dissolution of the tonal system, [...] the creative musician, finding himself placed before the absolute of his creative freedom, directly confronts what, once abolished the tonal universe, remains of music: the purity of its essence and its temporal soul. (1962, p. 413). Therefore, the fact that any sound, any chord, any musical event can follow another (1962 p.414) without connections previously established by a system that organizes the totality of relations and form, then, according to Brelet, would remain music shapes time. Based on this proposition, we investigate the strategies used by creative musicians in the 20th and 21st centuries; what are the compositional implications of these strategies; what implications these temporal choices can bring to the understanding of the music produced in the 20th and 21st centuries; what are the aesthetic implications that these choices can bring. To try to answer these questions, we chose texts, interviews, musical works and other documents from five composers who dedicated themselves and produced a wide range of texts and works on the issues of time and music, they are: Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007), Pierre Boulez (1925-2016), Gérard Grisey (1946-1998) and Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001). In our investigation, regarding the subject, we also reflected on the temporal perception of music. And attached to this work, we present six compositions that were created based on the theoretical framework acquired during this research.
