Essa tese é um trabalho de análise de sete textos curatoriais de exposições internacionais escritos entre 1984 e 2012, que têm em comum a defesa da diferença cultural e a inclusão de artistas "não ocidentais" no contexto da arte canônica euro-estadunidense. Tal investigação permite constatar o modo como muitas concepções articuladas nos textos são frequentemente enraizadas em estereótipos identitários, generalizações culturais e binarismos conceituais, cujo discurso central ainda reflete a persistência de um pensamento hierárquico entre o Ocidente e o "não Ocidente". Por outro lado, é possível afirmar que surgem novas terminologias acerca da alteridade como instrumentos relevantes para o exercício conceitual da escrita da história da arte. Proponho então um exercício crítico dos textos curatoriais em torno das terminologias empregadas e suas filiações teórico-semânticas. Trata-se de uma estratégia a fim de se encontrar noções explícitas, ou mesmo implícitas, que demonstrem as perspectivas estereotipadas próprias do eurocentrismo, de um lado, e as reivindicações de autores do Sul Global, de outro. O paralelismo entre os textos nos ajuda a compreender uma série de posições acerca do tema da alteridade nas artes visuais.

This thesis is an analytical study of eight curatorial texts from international exhibitions written between 1984 and 2012, which share a common focus on advocating for cultural differences and the inclusion of "non-Western" artists within the context of Euro-American canonical art. This investigation reveals how many concepts articulated in the texts are often rooted in identity stereotypes, cultural generalizations, and conceptual binarisms, with their central discourse still reflecting the persistence of hierarchical thinking between the "West" and the "non-West." On the other hand, it is evident that new terminologies about otherness emerge as relevant tools for the conceptual exercise of writing art history. I propose a critical examination of curatorial texts regarding the terminologies used and their theoretical-semantic affiliations. This approach aims to identify explicit or implicit notions that demonstrate stereotypical perspectives inherent in Eurocentrism on one hand and claims made by authors from the Global South on the other. The parallelism between the texts helps us understand various positions on the theme of otherness in visual arts.
