O termo e o conceito de direitos humanos é um dos mais contestados e discutidos em nossa sociedade. As mulheres são um grande exemplo de como os direitos fundamentais são efetivados sempre mediante muita luta e disputas. A evolução dos direitos das mulheres reflete a historicidade inerente aos direitos humanos, e pode ser dividida em quatro fases, tendo como marcos legais: as três conferências mundiais sobre direitos humanos das mulheres (México 1975, Copenhague 1980 e Nairóbi 1985) e a Conferência de Beijing de 1995 que em sua Plataforma de Ação elege 12 áreas críticas de intervenção prioritária, dentre elas a comunicação social. Produto deste processo, o Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) busca monitorar a relação entre a mídia e as mulheres, sendo o mais amplo e longevo diagnóstico sobre gênero e mídia. A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo apresentar e aplicar o GMMP, a partir do exercício de uma adaptação de sua metodologia. Busca contribuir para o debate sobre o papel da comunicação em relação aos Direitos Humanos, mais especificamente os direitos das mulheres, com a realização de uma análise da cobertura da mídia brasileira sobre o tema da dignidade menstrual. Analisamos a produção sobre o tema veiculada em duas mídias brasileiras de diferentes perfis, durante o ano de 2021: a versão online do jornal Folha de S.Paulo, e o Portal Catarinas. Constatamos que o tema recebeu uma cobertura relevante da mídia, que contribuiu para despertar o interesse do grande público. Mas vimos ainda que a maior parte das matérias perde a oportunidade de aprofundar o tema e pensar de maneira mais ampla, por exemplo, quando atrelam a questão apenas ao aspecto material. As matérias analisadas também demonstram como a busca por um jornalismo mais engajado, quebrando com um paradigma de objetividade, é essencial para que o jornalismo concretize seu importante papel na difusão de uma cultura de direitos.

The term and the concept of human rights is among the most contested and discussed in our society. Women are a great example of how fundamental rights are enacted always through much struggle and contention. The evolution of womens rights reflects the historicity inherent to human rights, and can be divided in four phases, having as legal landmarks the three world conferences on womens human rights (Mexico City 1975, Copenhagen 1980 and Nairobi 1985) and the Beijing Conference in 1995, that in its Action Platform elects 12 critical areas for priority intervention, among them media and communication. A product of this process, the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP), aims to monitor the relationship between media and women, being the broadest and most long-lasting diagnostic about gender and media. This research has as its main goal to present and apply the GMMP methodology, in exercising an adaptation of the methodology. Also aims to contribute to the debate over the role of mass media in human rights, more specifically womens rights, by performing an analysis of Brazilian news media coverage on the theme of menstrual dignity. We analyzed the output on the theme published in two different Brazilian news outlets during 2021: the digital version of the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper and in the Catarinas Portal. We found that the theme received fairly large media coverage, which contributed to raise the interest of the general public. But we also saw that most of the stories miss the opportunity to deepen and broaden the subject, for example, when they link it only to the material aspects. The analyzed stories also demonstrate how the quest for a more engaged Journalism, breaking with the objectivity paradigm, is essential for Journalism to fulfill its important role in the diffusion of a culture of rights.
