O trabalho procura estabelecer os conceitos e fundamentos para aplicação e utilização de sistemasCAD/CAM na engenharia mecânica e analisa os requisitos para sua operação com sucesso. Faz uma comparação dos tipos de modelamento geométricos existentes e estabelece sua adequação aos diversos campos de projetos mecânicos para obter os melhores resultados. Também comenta o efeito dessa tecnologia nas atividades de engenharia, seu alcance e as novas áreas de estudo que se abrem. Finalmente, propõe um roteiro para implementação e seleção de sistemas CAD/CAM, considerando a justificativa para sua implantação e proposta de treinamento para sua utilização eficaz.

This essay aims at establishing the concepts and fundamentals for CAD/CAM application/utilization in Mechanical Engineering branches and analyses the requirements for sucessful operation. It appraises the available modeling techniques to establish a suitable relationship between them and mechanical design activities to get the best results. Also, this essaycomments on CAD/CAM technology effects on engineering manufacturing routines, its future and new branches for study that have coming up. Finally, it proposes an implementation routine and system selection for mechanical applications considering CAD/CAM system justification, and training proposal for skilled operation.
