O consumo cultural e seus determinantes são amplamente tratados na literatura, sendo o local onde os indivíduos residem um dos seus principais fatores. No entanto, apesar de se saber que o consumo ocorre principalmente em áreas urbanas e que cidades maiores apresentam maior probabilidade e intensidade de consumo, as razões ainda são pouco exploradas. Esse trabalho trata das relações entre localidade, consumo cultural e seus determinantes. A característica urbana do consumo cultural é usualmente justificada pela ampla oferta cultural nesses lugares, mas evidências empíricas contrariam essa justificativa. Diniz e Machado (2011) e Almeida, Lima e Gatto (2020) encontraram que a oferta cultural reduz ou não impacta os gastos familiares com cultura. e sugerem que isso pode ser uma consequência das políticas públicas de incentivo ao consumo cultural: essas localidades teriam mais atividades culturais gratuitas. No entanto, as bases de dados utilizadas por esses autores (Pesquisas de Orçamentos Familiares (POF) 2002-2003 e 2008-2009), não continham informações que possibilitassem a verificação. A POF 2017-2018, no entanto, apresenta dados de despesas não monetárias, sendo possível analisar o impacto da oferta cultural incluindo o acesso gratuito à cultura. Os primeiros resultados encontrados indicaram que a oferta não impacta o consumo cultural nas Regiões Metropolitanas (RMs) brasileiras. Como, então, a localidade impacta o consumo cultural? Para responder a essa pergunta foram analisados os determinantes do consumo nas capitais brasileiras. Primeiro, foi verificado se o tamanho da cidade impacta na probabilidade de consumo e os resultados encontrados apontam para um aumento da probabilidade de consumir cultura em cidades maiores. Em segundo lugar, foi analisado o comportamento dos determinantes do consumo cultural em cidades de diferentes tamanhos. Como resultado, encontrou-se que alguns determinantes impactam de forma diferente o consumo, dependendo do tamanho da cidade. A oferta cultural também tem influência diferente sobre o consumo doméstico e o consumo externo de cultura. As diferenças e similaridades dos determinantes do consumo encontradas possibilitam a melhoria de políticas públicas para a cultura, evitando a ampliação das desigualdades no acesso a bens e serviços culturais, além de orientarem de forma mais precisa agentes privados e gestores culturais.

Cultural consumption and its determinants are widely discussed in the literature, and the place where individuals live is one of its main factors. However, despite the knowledge that consumption occurs mainly in urban areas and that larger cities present greater probability and intensity of consumption, the reasons are still little explored. This work deals with the relationship between place, cultural consumption and its determinants. The urban characteristic of cultural consumption is usually justified by the wide cultural supply in these places, but empirical evidence contradicts this justification. Diniz and Machado (2011) and Almeida, Lima and Gatto (2020) found that cultural supply either reduces or doesn´t impact family spending on culture and suggest that this may be a consequence of public policies to encourage cultural consumption: these locations would have more cultural activities free of charge. However, the databases used by these authors (Family Budget Surveys (POF) 2002-2003 and 2008-2009) didn´t have information that would allow verification. The 2017-2018 POF presents data on non-monetary expenses, making it possible to analyze the impact of the cultural supply, including free access to culture. The first results indicated that supply doesn´t impact cultural consumption in the Brazilian Metropolitan Regions (MRs). How does locality impact cultural consumption? To answer this question, the determinants of consumption in Brazilian capitals were analyzed. First, it was verified whether city size impacts the probability of consumption and the results found point to an increase in the probability cultural consumption in larger cities. Second, the behavior of the determinants of cultural consumption in cities of different sizes was analyzed. As a result, it was found that some determinants impact consumption in different ways, depending on city size. Cultural supply also influences domestic consumption and external consumption of culture. The differences and similarities of the determinants of consumption found make it possible to improve public policies for culture, avoiding the increase of inequalities in cultural access. In addition to providing more precise guidance to private agents and cultural managers.
