As camadas da infraestrutura de um pavimento ferroviário convencional podem ter seu desempenho prejudicado em razão do elevado teor de umidade do solo de subleito, ocasionado pelo acentuado grau de contaminação do lastro. O entendimento do efeito catastrófico que pode ser gerado a médio prazo a partir da manutenção inadequada do pavimento ferroviário permitirá a elaboração e implementação de planos eficientes e incremento de performance. O presente estudo tem o objetivo de dissertar sobre os principais aspectos relacionados à infraestrutura ferroviária que podem comprometer o desempenho operacional dessa modalidade de transporte. As camadas de lastro e subleito, quando não manutenidas ou impactadas pela falta de manutenção de sistemas acessórios como a drenagem, perdem suas funções estruturais reduzindo a capacidade de transporte e aumentando o risco de acidentes. O presente estudo irá apresentar também uma vasta pesquisa de campo e laboratório realizada para caracterizar as condições reais de uma plataforma ferroviária em operação no Brasil e verificar os possíveis efeitos da falha de manutenção na sua capacidade de suporte instalada.

Abstract in English
The infrastructure layers of a conventional railway may have their performance impaired due to the high moisture content of the subgrade, caused by the accentuated degree of ballast contamination. The understanding of the catastrophic effect that can be generated in the medium term from the inadequate maintenance of the railway pavement will allow the elaboration and implementation of efficient plans and increased performance. This study aims to discuss the main aspects related to the railway infrastructure that can compromise the operational performance of this mode of transport. The ballast and subgrade layers, when not maintained or impacted by the lack of maintenance of accessory systems such as drainage, lose their structural functions, reducing the transport capacity and increasing the risk of accidents. This study will also present a vast field and laboratory research carried out to characterize the real conditions of a railway in operation in Brazil and to verify the possible effects of maintenance failure on its installed support capacity.
