The objective of this work was to investigate the tribological behavior - friction, wear and lubrication regime - on the sliding of alumina - alumina ceramic pair in water, and to verify the possibility of reaching low friction coefficient (lower than previously obtained in the literature ? ? 0.2). The effect of the velocity, the effect of the load, the effect of the addition of friction modifiers on the water and the initial roughness effect of the disc were studied. The hypothesis that guided the choice of these variables were that the low friction coefficients would result from a hydrodynamic lubrication system and/or a boundary lubrication system generated by a low shear stress layer. In addition to these variables, the equations that governed the lubricated systems were also studied in order to try to have a better understanding of the lubrication regime. The tests were carried out in the tribological test configuration ball on disc under normal load between 24.7 N and 100.3 N and sliding velocity between 0.1 m/s and 2 m/s. The water used in the tests was filtered, distilled and deionized, the friction modifiers used were amorphous colloidal silica, aluminum hydroxide and silicon carbide. The alumina balls were commercially purchased, and the alumina discs were derived from previous works. All materials were characterized for their physical and mechanical properties. In the preliminary tests, the system reached, after 100 hours of test (360000 meters), values of friction coefficient ? ? 0,08. These values were smaller than the one found in the literature. When the tests were carried out with the highest speed, the system reached coefficients of friction lower than 0.02. The tests with lower initial roughness showed higher coefficient of friction. Analyzing all the theoretical and experimental results, it was possible to verify that for the alumina - alumina pair the lubrication regime is probably the mixed, partially hydrodynamic and partially boundary regime. From the experimental data, it was also possible to construct theoretical predictions for the coefficient of friction and wear.
