Abstract in English
Theon Spanudis donated 367 artworks to the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo (MAC-USP). The process which transferred the artworks from the collector's private sphere to a public institution was done in two stages, one in 1979 and other in 1986. In the transfer, seven tempera paintings made by the artist Eleonore Koch entered the museum's collection. Through the analysis of the documentation of Theon Spanudis in the Archives of the Institute of Brazilian Studies (IEB-USP), this work intends to place the collector in the aesthetic debates of his time and recover the relationship of friendship between him and the artist Eleonore Koch. Based on data about the artist, whose trajectory was closely connect to the painter Alfredo Volpi and to the collector Theon Spanudis, this study aims to punctuate her autonomy and relationships in the artistic field of São Paulo. The research intended to understand the intellectual circle that Koch and Spanudis belonged to and how their contributions to art in Brazil might be interpreted in a broader perspective.
