EFFECT OF SPECIFICITY OF PREVIOUS MOTOR ACTIVITIES ON MOTOR CONTROL IN ELDERLY INDIVIDUALS

Abstract in English
The aim of this study was to analyse the influence of extensive practice in specific sport skills and a higher aerobic fitness on the maintanance of motor performance in the elderly. Two hypotheses were tested: (a) cerebral oxygenation, which explains that motor performance can be preserved in general through the increment of the oxygen available to the brain; and (b) selective maintanance, which proposes that movement capacity is preserved only in sensorimotor functions used intensively during sistematic practice. These hypotheses were tested through the evaluation of senior athletes in tennis and running, and active young and old adults, in tasks requiring several sensorimotor functions and in VO2max. The results indicated a higher performance in most tasks for the young adults in relation to the elderly groups, which did not differ from each other. The only exception to this pattern was observed in the analysis of the coincident timing task, which showed that master tennis players performed similarly to the young adults and were superior to the other elderly groups. A moderate correlation between motor performance and VO2max was observed, which reached higher values for the senior athletes. These results supported both hypotheses, selective maintenance and cerebral oxigenation, indicating that there is a component specific to the practice and another one that is general to the whole system in the preservation of movement control as an individual gets older.
