Abstract in English
In this work we use first principles methods based on the LMTO-ASA ("Linear Mufün-Tin Orbital - Atomic Sphere Approximation") formalism to study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of metallic systems with bidimensional symmetry. Using the Real Space (RS-LMTO-ASA) method we study the Fe and Pd surfaces on [001], [110] and [111]. We investigate how the different structural aspects of Pd layers on the Fe(001), Fe(110) and Fe(111) surfaces affect their own magnetic behavior, determining their relation to the experimentally observed polarization ranges of the Pd layers. We also investigate the magnetic behavior of some defects in Pd(001), Pd(110) and Pd(111) surfaces. For the case of Fe and Co impurities in Pd surfaces, we obtain for their magnetic moment values near the saturation one, and we show that these values decrease linearly as the number of nearest neighbors increases. We obtain a high polarization induced in the atoms of Pd near the impurities, which indicates the existence of a surface giant magnetic moment similar to the one experimentally observed for impurities of Fe and Co in bulk Pd. We study Ru impurities in Pd surfaces, investigating a possible increase in the Ru magnetic moment, once experimental results indicate the presence of magnetism in the case of Ru in bulk Pd. We also investigate the magnetic properties of isolated Fe clusters embedded in the Pd(001) surface, and of random layers of Fe and Co in the Pd(001) surface. The results for the random layers are obtained using the coherent potential approximation (CPA), using the k-space Tight-Binding (TB-LMTO-ASA) method. Moreover, the magnetic behavior of thin layers of Cr in Fe/Cr/Fe(001) trilayers and superlattices is studied using the RS-LMTO-ASA method. The effects of lattice compression and interface mixing are investigated, and it is shown that they can cause large reductions of the Cr magnetic moments. The values are in general in excellent agreement with experiment and other calculations, when available in the literature.
