Detailed studies of the basic volcanic rocks of the Northern Parana Basin (Region of Ribeirão Preto, SP) revealed that these rocks were affected by pre-meteoric activity (hydrothermal alteration) before being exposed to the supergene system of alteration linked to the lithosphere/atmosphere interface. Mineralogical and structural transformations are studied in the various concomitant phases and in those that followed the continental magma extrusion Fine crystalline-chemical analyses, using modern methods, demonstrated that the mineralogical paragenesis of the hydrothermal alteration evolved forming successive zones due to the diffusion of percolant solution to the spaces in the rock matrix (fissures, veins, etc) and vice versa. The appearance of sequential crystalline-chemical paragenesis in zones suggest that the hydrothermal activity occurred during two successive processes of alteration: - the expulsion of the water from the rock during the later stages of magma cooling and, - the continuous process of dissolution of the rock wall and the ionic diffusion involving the rock system of structural voids. The expulsion of the water induces corrosion, hydration, and pseudomorphic crystallizations of primary phases (which are more susceptible to alterations), in the interior of the basic rock - the interstitial glass and the olivines -, while the other primary mineralogic phases (plagioclases, pyroxenes, etc) may remain unaltered. The dissolution process of the rock, in the rock/voids system, together with ionic diffusion, induces the development of distinct alteration haloes, zoned around the structural fissures within the rock. These haloes mark a more intensive hydrothermal activity, which is finalized by the microsequences and crystalline chemical precipitations of the final sealing of the residual fissures and other spaces in the rock. The hydrothermal action was followed by weathering action on apparently unaltered rocks initially developing a thin "front" of superficial alteration. This alteration system, associated with pedological processes, can lead to the formation of three major levels or groupings of alteration horizons and superficial accumulation: alterites, glebular and soil surface materials. The principal structural, mineral, and geochemical characteristics of these levels provide information about the nature, organization, and relation of the components (fabric and micromorphological soil structures) and the evolution of their transformations to the establishment of a complete lateritic profile. A small investigation of the evolutionary history shows the complexity of the generation of these profiles in the landscape.
