The genesis and distribution of cambisols and latosols occurring in the Central Part of the Structural Province of Mantiqueira were studied through the analysis of eleven soils and alteration profiles and some supplementary samples. Physical, chemical and mineralogical analysis were carried out and a special emphasis was given to the microscopic studies aiming the evolution of the mineralogical and structural transformations. Intensive hydrolysis was found to be the mechanism responsible for the formation of the pedologic cover, under the climatic conditions of the region. Nevertheless, the slight climatic variations observed, could not explain the presence of soils with different evolution degrees. Undoubtly, the topography is the main factor, which accounts for the different intensities of the hydrolytic process and consequently for the genesis and distribution of the soils in the different parts of the studied region. On the basis of the various geomorphological compartments, the region was subdivided into two main areas, according to the nature of the dominant secondary products and the structural organization of the soil material. The cambisols from the highland of the northern and central parts were developed "in situ" with a slight contribution of reworked material on the surface. These Soils constitute the roots of eroded profiles, and contain mainly gibbsite, and a certain amount of interlayred minerals (Al - biotite - vermiculite) and poorly crystallized kaolinite. They represent an incomplete evolution state, where the pedoplasma is slightly different as compared to the alteration plasma which contains pseudomorphic minerals of biotite and feldspars, as well as iron and aluminium amorphous material. On the other hand the cambisols from the southern part of the studied region present profiles that are thicker than ordinary soils of that category. These soils have no weatherable primary minerals and are typical kaolinitic showing a considerable amount of vermiculite with interlayer aluminium. In this case, the material is spedic with a lot of plasmic separations. The latosols, occurring in the lower parts as compared to the cambisols are developed from transported material and consequently there is no relationship between the pedoplasma and the alteration plasma. The material originally well altered, change rapidly and show a pedoplasmic evolution towards the microagregation which is typical of the latosolic B horizon.
