Abstract in English
Eleven circular structures of Água Vermelha region are here described. The features unconformably cut off basaltic flows of the Serra Geral Formation exposed along the Rio Grande River Valley, and are filled with pyroclastic breccias and thin basaltic flows, formed under subaerial environment as result of lava lakes activity. All these circular features have similar morphology and structure patterns, as long as they could be observed, and a single genetic process may be envisaged. Their essential characteristic are: - different thickness and structural pattern of the thin lava layers that fill the crater relative to the country basalts; - unconformable contact to the wall rock; -associated ring dykes, sometimes multiple dykes, of compact basalts, clearly recognized through their horizontal columnar jointing; - concentric and radial joint systems in the country basalts; - ring dykes with sedimentary clastic material or secondary/late mineral fillings. The review of the features and characteristics of the pyroclastic deposits of some small volcanic craters, allowed to conclude that the circular structures of Água Vermelha are to be related to magmatic explosions rather than to maars, tuff cones of tuff rings. The observed morphological and structural features indicate that at least three eruptive episodes occurred through the craters and associate dykes of Água Vermelha, and, so, they probably represent a kind of lava feeder for the basaltic flows of Paraná Basin.
