The área studied is a small parto f a watershed near the town of Ilha Solteira. The substratum is of basalt with a generally weak, variable contribution of intertrapped sandstone. There is also a covering layer of quartz, sandstone and basalt pebbles. The field work is characterized by the identification and study of vertical soil profiles, in toposequences and, principally, by research and in-depth study of lateral transitions. It also permits the identification of various different types of pedogenesis and horizons, organized in vertical and lateral sequences. The soil mantle under study was characterized by the presence of a kaolinite-dominated soil sample and another smectite-dominated one. The spatial convection between them demonstrates that the kaolinitic soil is the older, and between the two some pebbles were presumably deposited. In this case, it suggests that the sucession of the kaolinite-predominant soil to the smectite-predominant soil occurs at an ascendent front of bisialitization, transforming the soil upwards from the base. The smectite-predominant soil mantle presents vertical nodulous sequences, with red lithorelictal nodules and a polihedric matrix. In the modified beige basalt at the profile's base, the nodules partially lose silica, also concentrating iron and, to a lesser degree, aluminium. In the nodulous horizons, some nodules are transformed into plasma, and the iron liberated may enrich the solutions at the profile's base. The nodulous sequences in the polihedric matrix are transformed, upwards from the base, by a clayey and vertic horizon, without nodules, which appears as a wedge, between the nodulous horizons and the modified basalt. Under the microscope, this transformation is characterized by a reduction in cohesion and by the fissuring of the nodules. The determinism of this transformation could be the modification of the hydric regimen, in terms of water concentration, at the centers of the depressions caused by irregularities of the basalt changes. A different transformation front affects the smectite-predominant soil mantle, whose soil color changes laterally and vertically from red (uphill, at the summit of the profiles) to brown (downhill, at the base of the profiles). This modification is related to, the downhill soil humidity. It corresponds to the soil mantles most recent phase of evolution.
