A primeira, vertical, ocorre exclusivamente no platô e é litodependente.

The association of the Cambic-Gley soils covers an extensive area of the Brazilian Amazon Forest (the southwest portion of the basin is covered by the tertiary sediments of the Solimões Formation). The plain and debased surfaces of the plateaus in this region develop depressions that are connected or not to the axles of regional drainage. Two types of associated vegetation, forests and savannah fields, manifest paleoclimatic changes. Earlier studies associated the presence of Cambic soils with the forest areas and the Gley soils with the areas covered with savannah. In this thesis, after the study of the soil in the scale of the elementary basin, it was determined that the separation of these two great soil units is intimately related to the topography, and is very inconsistent with the distribution of the vegetation: the Cambic soils develops in the plateau, while the Gley develops in the depressions, and these areas are in the fields or forests (they remain flooded eight months a year). The detailed study of a representative toposequence of this system shows that the soil from the plateau is argillic, with a red B horizon, medium to weak porosity, and consequently medium to weak permeability, and in the base, at 80cm of depth, there is a plinthite which generally occurs in this region. In the depression, the soil is silty clay to silty clay loam, white, and at 50cm of depth, there is a plinthite with dominance of white materials. The vertical and lateral organization of the soils from the toposequence evidence two dynamics of evolution. The first, the vertical one, occurs only in the plateau and is lithodependent. The second, the lateral one, develops from the depression and advances in to the plateau, transforming the original cover. This last process determines the development and expansion of two white horizons that evolve from the stained clay and follow two separate ways of evolution: one through the development of a eluvial horizon with loss of iron, and the other though the development of a horizon with loss of iron that maintains the characteristics of the stained clay. At the end of the study, a model of the genesis and evolution of this system is presented, providing basis to predict the future landscape of this great area of the Amazon Forest.
