Abstract in English
The geology, mineralogy and genesis of the smectites of the Paleogene sediments of the Continental Rift of Southeastern Brazil (CRSB), represented by the Taubaté Group (Resende, Volta Redonda, Taubaté and São Paulo basins), and the Itaboraí Formation (Itaboraí basin), Sete Barras Formation (Sete Barras Graben) and Guabirotuba Formation (Curitiba basin), are the subject of this study. Emphasis was placed on the characterization of these clay minerals and the recognition of possible source areas of the mudstones within the context of Paleogene paleogeography and paleoclimate for this area. Field reconnaissance and sampling of the sedimentary deposits was followed by mineralogical and geochemical laboratory analyses, including petrographic studies, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), qualitative and semi-quantitative punctual chemical analyses (EDS), and inductively coupled plasma - atomic emission spectrometry (ICP/AES) and - mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) of both total sample and fine fractions. Carbonate rocks associated with the Paleogene deposits of CRSB were also studied in order to complement the understanding of the regional geological context of the smectites. Paleocene carbonate rocks of the Itaboraí Formation present textural features as well as negative isotopic values of 'C POT.13' and 'O POT.18' that corroborate its classification as travertine derived from percolating hot waters. In the alluvial fan systems of the Resende, Sete Barras and Guabirotuba formations and the upper parts of the Itaboraí Formation, the matrix of the mudstones is massive and made up essentially of detrital smectites (beidellites). Mica and kaolinite occur in variable proportions and quartz and feldspar are the main clastic grains in these rocks. This smectite is platy and relatively coarse-grained (palte > 5 microns in diameter), with slightly undulated boundaries. The sharp curve of the basal 001 reflection of these smectites, with full width at half maximum (FWHM) <1.3°, suggests their high degree of crystallinity. The lacustrine sediments of the Tremembé Formation are composed of fine- to medium-grained (<5 microns) detrital beidellites of lower degree of crystallinity (basal 001 reflection, FWHM >1.3°), the result of interaction with lacustrine waters. The origin of these smectites is attributed to neoformation processes during the generation of paleosols, thet began with the alteration of the Precambrian basement rocks of CRSB in the Early to Middle Eocene. Climatic conditions at this time tended to the aridity and relief was low due to the development of the South American Planation Surface, at the end of the Late Cretaceous and beginning of the Paleogene. In this paleogeographic and paleoclimatic context, chemical weathering tended to homogenize mineralogically and geochemically the alteration products on a regional scate. Eodiagenetic products and features observed in the argillaceous rocks include neoformed pyrite, compaction of the sediments and crystallization of authigenic smectites. Chemical weathering acting upon the Paleogene deposits of the CRSB since their deposition led to the formation of halloysite, pedogenetic calcretes, hematitic duricrust derived from ferruginous dolomite and different generations of kaolinite. The influence of hydrothermal solutions on the deposits of the Resende Formation is revealed by globules and lepispheres of silica and euhedral crystals of barite which precipitated in the sandstones of this unit in the Taubaté and São Paulo basins. Observed textural relationships indicate that the silica formed prior to the barite. The geological, mineralogical and genetic characterization of the smectites of the Paleogene deposits of the CRSB points to the detrital origin and high degree of crystallinity of these clay minerals in the mudstones as the main factors impeding their use in industry. Alteration of the detrital smectites of the Tremembé Formation resulted in disordered structures, with greater technological possibilities. It is here suggested that the potential industrial utility of these clay minerals may by tentatively evaluated by the measurement of the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the 001 reflection of the smectite in X-ray diffractograms of total sample.
