Abstract in English
The Surubim copper deposit, with 44 million metric tons of ore at 0,8% Cu, belongs to the Curaçá River Valley (Vale do Rio Curuçá) Cooper Province, located in the north-northeastern part of Bahia State. It occupies an area delimitated by the 9° 34' 00'' and 9° 34' 30''S parallels and the 39° 51' 00'' and 39° 52' 15''W meridians, approximately 40 kilometers to the north of the Caraíba deposit, the second largest in Brazil with 140 million metric tons of ore at 1% Cu. The Curaçá River Valley Cooper Province is situated in high-grade terranes, represented by gneisses and granulites with migmatitic nuclei, which exhibit a high structural and lithological complexity. Three distinct units were identified in the Surubim area on purely lithological basis: Unit 1, made up of gneissic rocks with a frequent banding due to the alternation of quartz-feldspathic layers with layers in which mafic minerals prevail; Unit 2, made up of alternate noritic, gabbro-noritic, gabbroic granulites with variable proportions, and of thin plagioclase - rich granulite lenses; and Unit 3, mineralized, in which pyroxenitic and noritic granulites with variable biotite quantities predominate, which occasionally constitute true biotitic terms. Lenses of calc-silicate rocks and iron-formations occur intimately associated with these lithologies. Garnet-rich or graphitic horizons are also common in rocks of all units. Mineralization is concentrated mainly in rocks of Unit 3; low grade mineralization could also occur in Unit 2, when this unit is in intimate relation with Unit 3, thus suggesting remobilization from this last one. It occurs as disseminated cooper and iron sulfides, locally concentrated due to remobilizations common in this deposit, and it is made up essentially of chalcopyrite, bornite and idaite, mainly associated to magnetite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite and occasionally to pyrite and arsenopyrite. Ni, Cu and Pb tellurets enclosed in chalcopyrites and bornites are common. Chalcocite, digenite, covellite, anilite-djurleite, originated from chalcopyrites and bornites as well as supergene cooper carbonates also occur. The mineralogical associations observed in the rocks from the three units are indicative of high grade, granulite facies metamorphism, and also exhibit features which indicate later retrometamorphic and hydrothermal episodes that led to the development of mineral associations typical of greenschist facies, and locally even lower grade. Paragenetic studies of the mineral phases in equilibrium (silicates and sulfides) indicate temperatures between 700°C and 750°, under intermediate pressure conditions for the peak of the granulitic metamorphism. Geothermometric and geobarometric methods that utilize the elements partition between coexisting mineral phases (microprobe data) led to the following reasults: opx + cpx geothermometry, temperatures between 700 - 750°C (Wood and Banno, and Well's methods); gr + bi geothermometry, temperatures around 680 - 700°C (Perchuck's method); gr + bi geothermometry, average temperatures around 760°C (Ferry and Spear's method, with Hoinkes's correction for Ca and Mn in garnets); oxygen geothermometry/geobarometry, based on Fe-Ti oxides, temperatures from 690°C to 780°C, and log'f'O IND. 2' from -16,07 to -13,37 (Buddington and Lindsley's, and Powell and Powell's methods, with original oxide compositions estimated); opx + gr geobarometry, pressure between 6 and 8 Kbar (Harley and Green's method). In particular, the oxygen geothermometer/geobarometer of the iron - titanium oxides, when applied to the currently observed compositions, indicates that the post-granulitic reequilibrations reached quite low temperatures, out of Buddington and Lindsley's calibration interval. Textural and mineralogical aspects observed in polished and thin sections, whole rock chemical analyses and the variation diagrams obtained from them, integrated with field observations and the study of drill-core samples suggest an original environment in which the alternation of chemical and clastic sediments, occasionally graphitic, with volcanic rocks was possible. In this volcano-sedimentary sequence, elements like Cu, Te and S could be provided by exhalative sources, which would have contributed to the deposition of cooper-rich iron formations; leaching of the volcanic rocks themselves due to the convection of fluids, caused by thermal gradients, could also have contributed to the concentration of the metallic elements. The possible faciological variations in the sedimentary sequence, related to differences between subenvironments in the sedimentary basin, as well as to eventually occuring interdigitations due to probable transgressive and regressive phases would explain the relative importance of the various lithologies in the Surubim and Caraíba deposits. The different position of the two deposits in the sedimentary basin would also explain the small thickness of the intercalations amongst the various lithological types at Surubim in contrast to the manner they occur in Caraíba. Apart from this, some other differences between the mineralizations at the two deposits were also observed : the Surubim ore is, in a general way, less homogeneous in grain size and texture when compared to that of Caraíba; it contains large quantities of fine, pulverulent sulfides difficult to release, localized preferentially inside the pyroxene pseudomorphs. These features reveal intense sulfide remobilizations in the Surubim deposit, which would be explained through the differences in the intensity of the post-granulitic phenomenous which affected the two regions. The various deformational phases which acted uppon the original volcano-sedimentary sequence would have given to the mineralized rocks of the region their currently observed geometry, which comprises lenses of variable size (tens of meters to many kilometers), usually elongated in the N-S direction.
