ln this work, we bring about a methodological and systematic revision of the species belonging to the genus Lepidotes Agassiz, 1832 from the Brazilian Mesozoic, comparing them to other species of Lepidotes and other Semionotidae from several foreign localities. We also present the geographic distribution of the genus during the Mesozoic, giving more emphasis to the occurrences in the Brazilian sedimentary basins, in an attempt to establish correlations among the stratigraphic units. The material studied consists mostly of incomplete specimens, scales, teeth, and/or disjointed bony elements, coming from the sedimentary basins of Northeastern Brazil. Lepidotes piauhyensis Roxo & Löfgren, 1936 is the species that presents the greatest number of complete specimens or at least anatomical complexes amenable to description. This fact allowed a detailed redescription of this species, unravelling previously unknown anatomical structures, especially the hyoid arch and the suspensorium, what resulted in the elaboration of a diagnosis with at least one autapomorphy and the presence of a synapomorphy with Lepidotes gloriae Thies, 1989. Lepidotes roxoi Silva Santos, 1953, Lepidotes souzai Woodward, 1908, and a new species of the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin also present partially complete skeletons, allowing a reasonable description of their specimens. We accomplished a meticulous histo-morphological study of the articulated and/or isolated scales. The microstructures present in these scales, canalicules of Williamson and osteocytes, received a statistical treatment, showing that the osteocytes represent, in quantitative terms, a diagnostic taxonomic character. The scales were also analyzed under the Scanning Electronic Microscope, with the aim of characterize the microtubercles present on the external surface of the ganoine layer. This analysis disclosed the average density of microtubercles as the most significant difference among the studied species. As the scales of Semionotidae are very frequent structures in the fossil record, we consider important to discuss in detail their origin and structure. Such a discussion can be found in Chapter 15 of this thesis. About 21 disarticulated teeth of Lepidotes sp. (from the Recôncavo Basin) were analyzed histo-morphologically, showing interesting details in the mineralogical constitution of the acrodin layer, that may be related to the crushing-type teeth. Mainly on the basis of the dentition of the Semionotidae, we elaborated a detailed study on the feeding habits of the group (Chapter 19). A specific status was not proposed for the new specimens here studied, comprising scales and isolated teeth, as well as an almost complete skull with part of the postcephalic region. The species Lepidotes llewellyni Silva Santos, 1953 has been proposed here as a synonym of Lepidotes souzai since it was described on the basis of incomplete material, consisting mainly of articulated scales. These scales are very similar to those of Lepidates souzai, regarding the morphology and ornamentation of the ganoine layer, represented by ridges and grooves. The species Lepidotes mawsoni Woodward, 1888, Lepidotes oliveirai Silva Santos, 1969 and Lepidotes dixseptiensis Silva Santos, 1963 were considered as valid, on the basis of not only the external morphology of the scales, but also their microstructure and the characteristics of the tubercles present on the external surface of the ganoine layer. The species Araripelepidotes temnurus (Agassiz, 1841) was not studied in detail, since it does not constitute the central focus of this thesis. However, we presente for the first time, a description of their caudal skeleton. Regarding the external morphology of some species of Semionotidae, Lepisosteidae, and Amiidae, families with not yet well-established phylogenetic relationships and that comprise the old group "Holostei", we performed a comparative morphometric study, with the aim of investigating if such families could be discriminated by means of multivariate statistical methods. The results of this study were published as a paper, a reprint of which was included in Appendix 8 of this thesis. Due to the great controversy that still persists in the phylogenetic position and the interrelationships of the Semionotidae, especially regarding the genus Lepidotes, we present a proposal for the phylogenetic relationships of this family, considering provisionally 13 taxa. This proposal will be expanded and discussed in future articles.
