Putting Laplanche to work: the never written book of Monzani

Abstract in English
In Freud: The Movement of a Thought, Luiz Roberto Monzani acknowledges a debt to Jean Laplanche. Adopting the interpretation of Sigmund Freuds work proposed by Laplanche, Monzanis thesis became one of the most important national and international publications on Freud. The release in 1987 of New Foundations for Psychoanalysis, in which Laplanche advances his own theory, triggered an opposition on Monzanis part that was already underlying his apparent alignment. Although he admits his disagreement with Laplanche, Monzani never wrote a book that developed his criticisms, which mainly lie in the rupture that Laplanches theory represents regarding Freudian concepts of the unconscious and the drive. The aim of this research is to investigate Laplanches work using the same method that Laplanche employs to put Freud to work: denouncing when he goes astray and declaring the points where Freud is not faithful to his own principles. To achieve this objective, it is necessary to grasp what Laplanches standpoint is and how it diverges from Freuds. If Laplanches purpose is to achieve the Copernican revolution, then how to understand why Laplanche goes astray towards biology, whether in his conceptualization of a translator baby or in his instinct-oriented theory of genitality? To differentiate himself from Jacques Lacan, Laplanche resorts to John Bowlbys attachment, relapsing on the biology he wanted to avoid. One possible hypothesis to these questions is that Laplanche envisions in Lacans transindividual unconscious the loss of a core component of psychoanalysis: the singularity of the unconscious based on intrapsychic elaboration.
