Abstract in English
This paper aims to investigate the impacts that seeing oneself in liberating images produces in the subjectivity of black women. By liberating images we mean those that free black women from race and gender stereotypes that, for centuries, have been present in our imagination. Intentionally, the photographs used were produced by black, Brazilian, contemporary photographers, in order to verify how this identification acts in the production of images. We worked, therefore, with photographic projects produced by the photographers Cat Tenório (belonging to the CATSU Collective), Helen Salomão, Mariana Ser and Pretícia Jerônimo and, besides interviewing them, we also interviewed four other women, each one photographed in a project, who were indicated by the respective photographers. For this investigation, we made use of the theories formulated by bell hooks, Grada Kilomba and Patricia Hill Collins, and used intersectionality as an analytical tool of oppressions. With this, we conclude that liberating images produce positive impacts on the subjectivity of black women, since they affirm their dignity, beauty and power, leading them to the stability of self-love, which makes them refuse the imprisoning images of racism.
