Abstract in English
Graffiti were collected (N=1349) in restrooms from "cursinhos" (secondary school courses that prepare students to get into the university) and from a university, located in São Paulo, SP, Brazil. Three studies were carried out with the data, as well as an exploratory study involving the use of questionnaires. In the first study, graffiti were classified according to 18 content categories for verbal inscriptions and four content categories for the drawings. No significant gender differences were found in terms of frequency of sexual graffiti. The second study included an analysis of the sexual terms used in the graffiti, and the third study involved an investigation of the different categories of sexual content of such inscriptions. In the second and the third studies, there was a greater frequency of anal content among graffiti produced in the male restroom of the "cursinhos" and sexual insults among graffiti produced in the male restrooms of the university, when compared to the production of inscriptions in the female restrooms of those places. A high frequency of hostile graffiti was also found in the male graffiti produced in the "cursinhos". Furthermore, both studies revealed a greater frequency of contents classified as "sexual compliment" produced by women than by men in the university restrooms. Aggressive sexual graffiti revealed that men directed their hostility against male homosexuals and women, against prostitutes. Aiming at the comprehension of motivational aspects involved in the production of restroom graffiti, a fourth study was carried out with the use of questionnaires that were answered by 83 students. Generally, the results were consistent with the ones observed in the other studies. A great percentage of men, in the second grade and at the university, mentioned sex and insults as the male preferred topics. Women, especially in the second grade, stated that love was one of the womens favorite themes. At the university, women appeared to be less romantic and chose sex as the most interesting female subject
