Abstract in English
This work deals with the process of aesthetic reception of the book The Devil to Pay in the Backlands by Joao Guimaraes Rosa, considered by many critics as the greatest book of Brazilian literature of the 20th century, based on interviews with ten ordinary readers, mostly undergraduates or graduates in Psychology. As a counterpoint to this material that we transcribe and analyze, we conducted another interview with a cultural producer of Rosario's work, transposed to the theater, also analyzed and incorporated in the final discussion of the work. Our experience with the aesthetic reception of this author's writings in classrooms of the Psychology course of a private university revealed to us that such literature was able to form and transform perceptions, often stiff and impervious to criticism and reflection, of objects which compose the praxis of a psychologist, such as prejudices, truths and "pure" lies, notions of good and evil, etc. We note that Rosa's work effectively contributed to the perception of transcendence, ascesis (search for moral upheaval), and epiphany (contact with metaphysics) through enlightenment. One can be amazed, however, that the book is considered "difficult", with impassable language and with scarce readers, even in literate layers of the population. We found, however, that the ordinary readers interviewed not only had the "courage" to make the "crossing" of the book, but realized their own lives resonated by the narrator jagunço Riobaldo and undoubtedly realized an idiosyncratic aesthetic apprehension, arising from different moments of the work. It was remarkable that the interviewees' own voices were charged with a poetic language breaking patterns, obviously composed of enormous emotional charge, just like the narrator's. We also seek to deepen in the psychic constitutions of the main protagonists of the work Riobaldo and Diadorim to try to reach its ontological and at the same time, aesthetic aspects absolutely transgressive of the common experience that happens in most of the life administered by the normative society to which we are all submitted. We have come to the conclusion that, more than triggering the capacity to experience truly formative experiences, this novel is also a rescue of voices of those who would never have a voice in standardized and reified cultural products. What also rises it as a political instrument of action in the world and of social transformation quite powerful
