Esta Tese estuda os processos de engajamento ambiental de jovens com ênfase nas narrativas de vida de membros de grupos ambientalistas juvenis e na história do Coletivo Jovem de Meio Ambiente de São Paulo (CJ-SP), Anticorpos de Gaia. A pesquisa se apóia em entrevistas gravadas em vídeo com jovens no Brasil e no Canadá, trabalhos de observação de campo, interação virtual, estudo de documentos e pesquisa bibliográfica. As trajetórias são analisadas em categorias que agregam diferentes influências das experiências de vida no engajamento, como: o contato com a natureza, as relações com a escola, família e trabalho e a participação nos grupos ambientalistas juvenis. A constituição e a evolução do CJ-SP são apresentadas como eixos que articulam as trajetórias dos jovens paulistas entrevistados. O entrelaçamento de processos de aprendizagem, socialização e ação prática é observado ao longo da formação da identidade ecológica dos indivíduos e dos grupos. As condicionantes do engajamento ambiental e o entrelaçamento destes processos são discutidos e compreendidos dentro de uma perspectiva sócio-histórica, que valoriza a ação positiva de estruturas e espaços educadores produzidos pela sociedade e orientados para a cultura da sustentabilidade. O olhar analítico para a influência destas estruturas e espaços educadores na trajetória dos indivíduos e grupos dialoga com teorias pedagógicas e sociológicas, que valorizam as interações simbólicas presentes nas experiências do cotidiano, que promovem a formação do sujeito dentro de suas relações com os outros, com o meio e consigo mesmo. As idéias de Alain Touraine, Alberto Melucci, Etienne Wenger, Herbert Blumer, Humberto Maturana, John Dewey, Karl Mannheim, Pascal Galvani, Paulo Freire, Zygmunt Bauman, dentre outros, contribuíram para discutir os processos de identização ecológica que se dão, de forma singular, na vida de cada um dos jovens ambientalistas aqui estudados. Verificou-se que os grupos ambientalistas juvenis estabelecem comunidades de prática, que, no diálogo com os novos movimentos sociais, potencializam a aprendizagem, a formação de redes sociais e processos de intervenção na realidade orientados pela responsabilidade socioambiental. A Tese sugere o aumento do incentivo às políticas públicas que colaborem para fortalecer estas comunidades de prática e o intercâmbio entre elas (no âmbito local e global).

This Thesis analyzes the processes of environmental engagement by youths with emphasis on the life narratives of members of youth environmental groups and the history of the São Paulo Youth Environmental Collective (YEC-SP), Antibodies of Gaia. The research is based on video recorded interviews with youths in Brazil and Canada, field observation, virtual interaction, studies of documents and bibliographic research. The trajectories are analyzed in categories that aggregate different influences of the life experiences upon the engagement, as: the contact with nature, relationships with school and work and participation in youth environmental groups. The constitution and evolution of YEC-SP are shown as axes that articulate the trajectories of the São Paulo´s interviewed youths. The crossing of the processes of learning, socialization and practical action is observed all along the ecological identity formation at the individual and group level. The conditionants of environmental engagement and the crossing of these processes are discussed and comprehended within a social-historical perspective, which valorize the positive action of the educational structures and spaces produced by society and oriented towards a culture of sustainability. The analytic view for the influences of these educational structures and spaces on the individual and groups trajectories dialogues with pedagogical and sociological theories, that value the symbolic interaction present on the daily experience, that promote the formation of the subject on his relations with others, with the environment and with himself. The ideas of Alain Touraine, Alberto Melucci, Etienne Wenger, Herbert Blumer, Humberto Maturana, John Dewey, Karl Mannheim, Pascal Galvani, Paulo Freire, Zygmunt Bauman, between others, contributed to discuss the processes of ecological creation of identity that happens, in a singular way, on the life of each one of the youth analyzed here. It was verified that the youth environmental groups establish communities of practice, that, in dialogue with the new social movements, empower the learning, the formation of social nets and the processes of intervention oriented by social and environmental responsibility. The Thesis suggests the increase of incentives to public policies that help to strengthen these communities of practice and the interchange between them (on the local and global level).
