Estudou-se a associação entre baixo peso ao nascer e fatores de risco identificáveis durante a gestação, para os quais existem possibilidades de prevenção ou controle. A população estudada compreendeu 30834 recém-nascidos vivos gemelares, cujos partos ocorreram em 1978 em 31 hospitais ou maternidades do Município de São Paulo.
