Abstract in English
INTRODUCTION: There are doubts about the effect of red wine regular consumption on the brain and on cognitive functions. In the present study, a comparison of brain structural and functional characteristics evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed between regular red wine consumers and abstainers without cognitive impairment. As structural characteristics, signal alteration in cerebral white matter and degree of global brain atrophy were evaluated. Regarding the functional characteristics, images of functional magnetic resonance studies and behavioral response parameters were evaluated during the cognitive tasks for executive and working memory functions. METHODS: Male volunteers, aged 50-75 years and without cognitive disorder were recruited through convenience sampling and divided into two groups: regular red wine - CVT (average age 61,9 ± 6,5 years) and abstainers - ABST (average age 57,9 ± 5,0 years). They were submitted to questionnaires for evaluation of diseases, smoking habit and alcohol consumption, manual preference, socioeconomic class, schooling, intelligence quotient and manifestations of depression. The consumption of alcoholic beverages was evaluated in relation to the average habitual intake of red wine, beer, sparkling wine, white wine and spirits during the five years prior to the entry of the volunteers in the study. Structural (Fluid attenuation inversion recovery and T1) and functional (based on BOLD - blood oxygen level dependent - signal in tasks of executive function (Stroop) and working memory (2-back)) brain MRI images were acquired. RESULTS: Ninety-seven volunteers were recruited, of which 51 were selected: 24 (approximately 47%) for CVT group and 27 (approximately 53%) for ABST group. In CVT group, the average daily equivalent amount of ethanol consumed was 32,0 ± 14,0 grams and 68,6 ± 20,3% of the ethanol consumed was in the form of red wine. No differences were observed between the groups in relation to MRI brain structural and functional features CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study showed that regular consumers of red wine and abstainers do not have structural and functional brain differences identified by MRI, therefore, no evidence was observed that regular consumption of red wine was associated with neither beneficial nor deleterious morphofunctional changes in the brain
