Abstract in Portuguese
Abstract in English
Objective: Identify protective factors for eating disorders (ED) and disordered eating (DE) in adolescents and adults. Method: A systematic literature search was conducted using Pubmed, Virtual Health Library APA PsyInfo, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases up to November 2022. All studies that measured protective factors for ED or DE published in English, Spanish, or Portuguese were eligible. The New Castle Ottawa-Scale Risk of Bias criteria was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. Results: Twenty-eight studies were included. Most of them were cross-sectional studies from USA and Canada and had low risk of bias. Many protective factors were identified and categorized into family, body image, social, personal or individual, and school-related factors. Conclusions: This review highlights that family ambiance, individual positive factors, and psychological well-being could be potential protective factors to prevent eating pathologies. Findings attempt to include content and strategies based on risk and protective factors for ED prevention programs.
