Abstract in English
The pain is often described in the literature as one of the major causes of inability besides being related to sleep disturbance, decrease of functional disability and consequently of the quality of life. Many studies that assess pain use the classifying criteria of fibromyalgia proposed by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR).The pain must be widespread and chronic in both sides and upper and lower body, trunk and limbs besides existing the presence of painful points called tender points. The aim of this study was to assess the pain, quality of life and secondary fibromyalgic symptoms anxiety and depression in adult population (35 to 60 years old) from Embu, town of the state of São Paulo. The research had two parts: in the first one 768 subjects participated and, in the second, 304. In both parts, the subjects were divided in 3 groups considering the pain: Widespread Pain (WpP), Regional Pain (RP) and Without Pain (WP). The first sample (n=768) was asked about the presence of pain and morning stiffness in an interview by phone. After that they were invited to be evaluated in Public Clinics. Pain Visual Analogical Scale (VAS), the Anxiety-Trace Inventory, the Anxiety-State Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Medical Outcome Study Short-Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) were used in the second sample (n=304), whose results suggest that the group with Widespread Pain (WpP) shows the most intense symptoms of pain, anxiety, depression and the worst quality of life with statistically significant difference between the groups (p<0,000).
