Abstract in English
Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease considered to be severe, which affects quality of life, characterized by signs and symptoms such as fever, malaise, weakness, pain, edema, heat, redness in any joint of the body, morning stiffness, fatigue, movement limitation and destruction of joint cartilage. This study aims to analyze the mandibular mobility, thickness of the masseter and temporal muscles, bite force and the quality of life of women with rheumatoid arthritis. Twenty-eight women, aged between 40 and 70 years old, were divided into two groups: rheumatoid arthritis (mean age 52.20 +/- 3.00 years, GAR, 14 women) and healthy group (mean age 49.40 +/- 2.40 years, GS, 14 women). The mandibular mobility (mm) was evaluated with digital caliper, under the conditions of maximum mouth opening, right lateral excursion, left lateral excursion and protrusion. The muscular thickness (cm) was measured by the image obtained from the SonoSite NanoMaxx ultrasound in the conditions of mandibular rest and dental clenching in maximum voluntary contraction. The Kratos digital dynamometer was used to evaluate the maximum molar bite force (Kgf) in the right and left sides. The analysis of oral health conditions in quality of life was observed using the OHIP-14Br questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS version 21.0, IBM®) and were then compared by students t-test, p ≤ 0.05). Significant statistical difference was found between GAR and GS for maximum molar bite force in the right side (p=0.03) and for oral health condition for quality of life (p=0.00), in the physical dimensions (p=0.00), psychological (p=0.00) and social (p=0.00). Therefore, the results of this study suggest that there was a reduction in maximal molar bite strength of women with rheumatoid arthritis as well as a negative impact of oral health conditions on quality of life in these women
