Abstract in English
Studies on intuitive eating have grown over the past few years. Intuitive eating is characterized by a strong awareness and food intake based on physical signals rather than external and emotional stimuli. The most used instrument to assess this construct is the Intuitive Eating Scale (IES), which measures the tendency of individuals to follow the physiological signs of hunger and satiety. Given the importance and scarcity of studies in Brazil in the area of intuitive eating, it is necessary to adapt instruments for the Brazilian population that access this component. The present study aimed to validate the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) in Brazilian adults of both sexes. The research was carried virtually and face-to-face with 691 men and women aged between 18 and 60 years. Participants responded to the IES-2 along with other instruments that assess body image, self-esteem, disordered eating, life satisfaction and positive and negative affect. The exploratory and confirmatory factor analyzes showed that the Brazilian scale has 18 items divided into the same four factors as the original scale. McDonald's omega coefficients demonstrated that the scale and its factors have adequate internal consistency and temporal stability was proven after four weeks in a sample of 180 participants. The instrument presented adequate convergent validity, through positive correlations with biopsychosocial well-being indicators and negative association with disordered eating and internalization of beauty ideals. The results of the present study support the validity of the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 in Brazilian adults, allowing future research on the components of intuitive eating in different cultural contexts.
