Abstract in English
We have prepared various heterogeneous catalysts based on the deposition of different concentrations of palladium on three different supports: activated carbon (1.3% Pd/AC and 1.7% Pd/AC), graphite (0.7% Pd/G and 2.2% Pd/G), and carbon nanotubes grown on activated carbon (0.9% Pd/CNT-AC and 2.0% Pd/CNT-AC). The CNT-AC composite was obtained by growing the CNT network over a surface of activated carbon granules by the chemical vapor deposition technique. The heterogeneous supports were impregnated with palladium by reduction in microemulsion. Atomic absorption spectroscopy helped to determine the concentration of metal in the catalysts. The prepared catalysts were used in the aqueous phase hydrogenation of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF), a compound derived from renewable biomass and used as the source of numerous chemical derivatives of high commercial value. We studied the selectivity of these catalysts in the hydrogenation of the C=C and C=O bonds under different conditions of temperature (90 to 130 °C), pressure (500 to 700 psi H2), and reaction time (2 h, 4 h, and 6 h). Compared to the catalyst based on carbon nanotube catalyst grown on activated carbon (CNT-AC), the catalysts based on activated carbon (AC) and graphite (G) exhibited lower catalytic activity and also catalyzed hydrogenolysis reactions, to culminate in a large quantity of by-products. The 0.9% Pd/CNT-AC catalyst was highly selective during the transformation of HMF into 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF) (> 99% selectivity at 130 oC, 500 psi H2, and 2 h of reaction), with 40% HMF conversion. The 2.0% Pd/CNT-AC catalyst provided high HMF conversion rates (> 99%) and was highly selective for the formation of DHMF (92% at 90 °C, 500 psi H2, and 6 h of reaction). In addition, this catalyst generated only a very low amount of by-products from HMF hydrogenolysis reactions. We evaluated the reuse of the 0.9% Pd/CNT-AC catalyst in the HMF hydrogenation as well as any possible structural alterations that emerged in the catalyst after the many catalytic cycles. There was no loss of Pd during recycling, but the catalytic activity reduced drastically due to movement of the nanoparticles from the carbon nanotubes to the activated carbon support. The HMF molecule was derivatized, to produce 5-(methoxymethyl)furfural (2a) and 5-(acetyloxymethyl)furfural (1a), which were also subjected to hydrogenation to evaluate the behavior of the prepared catalysts. The polar and apolar furan substrates interacted with the polar and apolar supported catalysts better, respectively. Therefore, catalysts based on CNT-AC present promising activity in the hydrogenation of the C=O bond of HMF, are highly selective for the formation of DHMF, Preparação e aplicações de compósitos nanoestruturados de carbono 4 Wesley Romário da Silva and give high HMF conversion. Interaction effects between the solvent and the substrate, the solvent and the catalyst, and the catalyst and the substrate were observed.
