Abstract in English
The discussion about the notion of what is "modern" has been present since the origins of the social thinking. One of the greatest current problems concerns the exhaustion of the theme of agriculture modernization. If, on one hand, there have been substantial advantages in productivity, increasing the offer of food, on the other hand the so-called "Green Revolution" did not succeed in stepping aside the specter of hunger for great contingents of the population, besides having provoked disastrous impacts on the environment and health. In Brazil, the modernization of agriculture has emphasized the agro-exporter model, based on the latifundium, marginalizing millions of family farmer. This seems to be the case of Monteiro Lobato and Santo Antônio do Pinhal, two municipalities embedded into the Serra da Mantiqueira (mountain ridge), close to the Paraíba Paulista Valley, a highly developed region. The economic profiles of the two municipalities were related with demographic, epidemiological and nutritional data. The results disclosed the following: the concentration of land properties is intimately related to the migratory processes; the rates of birth, fertility, jointly with that of infant mortality, suffered significant fall-downs; and, the secular tendency of growth for those who were born or lived their early childhood in the municipalities was only effective for women. The Author came to the conclusion that the epidemiological and nutritional transitions, based on an approach that views the processes of morbidity-mortality as a function of phases and development, are not enough to explain the complexity of the circumstances described in this paper.
