Abstract in English
In the first part of the study, nominated as The Explicit Violence it is stated that morbimortality of the working class follows the cycles of development and the crisis of capitalism. Regarding the cycles of development of primitive accumulation of capital, the predomination is of what could be called "pestilential" diseases such as communicable and consuptive diseases, with high mortality followed by deseases caused directly from work. In the pre-monopolist cycle, the above diseases decrease, but accidents due to work increase more and more. In the monopolist cycle the communicable diseases vanish, the diseases of conditions of work and acidents due to work diminish progressively and their place is taken by the chronic and degenerartive diseases in the industrialized countries which, together with external causes become the first cause of death. The cycles of development and causes of morbidity in the developed countries are compared with those of Brazil in the presente cycle, the primitive and explicit violence of work becomes less evident as cause of morbidity, without the evidence of relationship between cause and disease. The affection of soft parts of the members, specially of the superior one by repetitive strain injury (SRD constitutes the characteristic of the cycle and of the change of morbidity due to work. The second part of this study deals with this Occult Violence and the best example is the commerce of money. It discusses the evolution of brazilian financial institutions and that of the banks, with special emphasis on the bank where this research was carried out. A revision of the way those employees are submit to working conditions leading to infirmity and death is discussed with special mention to the lesions dueto repetitive strain injury (SRI). The affected workers are deeply interested in the subject of this study; based on a questionnaire answered by 525 workers and 346 of them presented writen personal documents describing their personal problems. From the quantitative point of view, this study is based on a non probabilistic sample of 1,223 cases of SRI notified by the empioyers to the National Institute of Social Security. The most frequent diagnosis is that of tenosynovitis (34%); the second one is that of miositis and epycondilitis (20%), followed by SRI in a more extensive sense. Nervous compressions were present in 10%. There was a frank predominance of the right side anda large number of bilateral problems. Most of the affected subjects were females (83%) and 13% of the whole sample was submited to surgery. The average time of absence to work was of 11 months. An analyse of the 346 statements shows feelings of loss; most of them present fear of incapacity to work, the difficulty to accept new working limits, the will to go back to work to avoid social and emotional discrimination, loss os social status. It also reveals the mental representation of the numerous institutions from wich they sought support.
