Abstract in English
In this paper a study of the evolution of proportional (Swaroop e Uemura and Nelson de Moraes), general, infant mortality, mortality by infectious diseases, life expectancy as well as of the medical and hospital resources in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, is dane. In the historical series studied, ( 1900-77), death rates have declined at the present century. There is a reasonable avalability of assistencial ressources. Rio Grande do Sul compares favourably with other Brazilian States, as far as vital indices are concerned. Comparison with foreign countries (with the limitations involved in this kind of comparison) is not so favourable. So called developed countries and some of the underdeveloped countries show better healtn indices. We discuss also, based on Government reports, historical factors which may have influenced health indices and health evolution in Rio Grande do Sul.
