Abstract in English
This study was undertaken as a kind of control-case design, for a prevalence survey, with the aim of verifying the effects of socioeconomic variables, as well as environmental and biological morbidity, on the growth of school children from low-income families. In 1994 a census was taken, measuring the height of all children entering both public and private schools in the municipality of Florianópolis/SC. For this study, school children living in poor areas were selected. There were 72 cases altogether that were characterized by a height/age relation of less than 2SD (standard deviations), compared with the reference population NCHS. The control groups were paired, according to sex, into two groups: control group 1- with 144 school children, whose height-age relation was between -1 SD and the average of the reference population (NCHS); and Control Group 2 - with 144 school children, whose height/age relation was above the average of the reference population (NCHS), up to +1 SD. The Mantel-Haenszel Association Test was utilized, to verify each variable regarding the height/age relation. Multivaried non-conditional analysis was utilized, to determine which of the two blocks of variables would turn out to have a significant effect(socio-economic, environmental and morbidity/biological), and in the next stage, to identify, within each block, the variables with a significant effect. In the first stage, the variables with a significant effect for control group 1 were socioeconomic factors- monthly family income and utilization of institutions of pre-school care. For control group 2, they were socio-economic factors - monthly family income, utilization of pre-school care facilities, educational level of the father: environmental factors proper garbage disposal; morbidity/biological - episodes of diarrheia, breast-feeding duration and child's weight at birth. In the final model, the socioeconomic variables (C1) and socio-economic variables and moobidity/biological (C2) remained significant. For control group 1, these variables involved monthly family income (< 2 SM - OR = 4,06- IC: 1,31 - 12,59) and utilization of pre-school care facilities (OR= 2,80 - IC:1,05- 7,47), while for control group 2, they involved monthly family income (2-4 SM- OR=5,05 -IC:1,83-13,94 and < 2 SM- OR= 4,41 -IC: 1,38-14,05), parents' educational level (0R=11,28- IC: 1,19- 107,0) and and the care received at pre-school institutions (OR = 7,93 - IC: 2,21 -28,37), child's weigth at birth (2500g - 3000g- OR= 4,69 - IC: 1,86 -11,85 and < 2500g- OR= 6,35- IC: 1,95 -20,60).
