This study assessed the orofacial dysfunctions in patients with and without cleft lip and palate and correlated with quality of life. We selected 120 patients, 35-65 years Anomalies Rehabilitation Hospital Craniofacial / USP and Bauru Dental School FOB/USP. The selected patients were divided into 2 groups: control group (CG) and fissure group (GF): 60 patients in each group (30 men and 30 women). Each patient underwent an interview and a clinical evaluation through NOT-S instruments (orofacial dysfunctions) and SF-36 (health related quality of life). The score was obtained and tabulated for each specific instrument. The statistical test of Mann-Whitney was applied to evaluate groups and genres in performing NOT-S and SF-36 and the chi-square test associated performance between NOT-S, the genres and groups. To correlate the instruments we used the Spearman correlation coefficient. 5% significance level was adopted for all statistical tests. The intra-examiner agreement index was K=0.63. When evaluating the NOT-S values between the groups, there were statistically significant differences for sexes (p<0.001), however when we evaluated the genders in the same group there was no difference. In performance evaluation of areas of NOT-S between GC and GF, was no statistical difference by associating groups in areas II (p=0.021), IV (p<0.001) and VI (p=0.002) in the interview, and in all areas of the test (p<0.001). In the evaluation of the SF-36 with the groups observed average higher valuesin all areas, with statistical difference for: general health (p=0.003), physical (p=0.014), social functioning (p<0.001), and vitality (p=0.006). By associating the SF-36 questionnaire between genders and groups was no statistical difference for females in the following areas: general health (p=0.002), social functioning (p=0.003) and vitality (p=0.036). The correlation between the domains of SF-36 and NOT-S for the control group there was significant difference only for the domain general health (p=0.047). In GF group we noted that there was correlation NOT-S with SF-36 in the following areas: general health (p=0.004), role emotional (p=0.028) and vitality (p=0.05) that is, the lower the value of NOT-S, better general health, role emotional and vitality. It concludes that the prevalence of orofacial dysfunctions in patients with cleft lip and palate is higher than in patients without cleft lip and palate; the orofacial dysfunctions adversely impacts the quality of life of patients with cleft in the areas: general health, role emotional and vitality and that no difference in the prevalence of orofacial dysfunctions between genders for patients with and without cleft lip and palate.
