Abstract in English
Cleft lip and palate (CLP) consist in a craniofacial malformation, with multifactorial etiology, whose paradigm consist in esthetics and speech alterations. Recent national and international studies have shown evidence of neuropsychological alterations, such as visual and motor perceptual functions, with alterations in academic performance and adaptation. The objective of the present study was to verify the relationship between cognitive visual and motor perceptual abilities with reading and writing pre-competencies, in children with LPC. For this study, 88 children with mean age of 6 years and 6 months, students of pre and primary schools, were selected and divided into 2 groups: GI 44 children with LPC; GII 44 children without developmental alterations as control group. As research instruments for data collection the following tests were used: R-2 test, Denver II Developmental Screening Test and Skills Assessment Battery for Reading and Writing (BACLE). Data were described and analyzed through graphs and tables, and submitted to statistical analysis, in order to determine the significance of the difference between the compared tests results. The results showed predominance of transforaminal cleft (61.36%). Considering the gender, GI showed predominance of males (52.27%) and GII of females (61.36%). Comparing the pre-competencies for reading and writing, GI showed inferior performance when compared with GII considering body scheme/spatial-temporal orientation, with statistical significance (p<0.001). The GI showed delay in the fine motor adaptive development (29.55%) and personal-social areas (20.46%); nevertheless, the GII also showed jeopardized performance referring to the fine motor adaptive development. Considering the results, it was possible to identify that the children with LPC showed significantly jeopardized visual and motor perceptual functions, suggesting interference in the quality of precompetencies for reading and writing learniIing.
