O período de 1979 a 1992 foi marcado pela efervescência política, social e cultural e do crescimento das lutas sociais pela redemocratização brasileira que acarretaram na organização de diversos movimentos sociais. Os movimentos sociais organizados no campo da saúde mental que se formaram na busca pela democratização e reorientação da assistência em saúde mental tiveram grande protagonismo na produção de políticas públicas de saúde mental. Neste estudo procuramos documentar e publicar a origem e a organização dos movimentos sociais organizados em Saúde Mental no Estado de São Paulo e sua influência na produção de políticas do Estado de São Paulo e na Reforma Psiquiátrica Brasileira, identificando quais foram os principais movimentos sociais organizados em saúde mental no Estado de São Paulo, no período de 1979-1992; desvelando as concepções teórico-conceituais que orientaram esses movimentos sociais e sua participação na produção das diretrizes da política de saúde mental e na Reforma Psiquiátrica Brasileira.

In Brazil, the historical period between 1979 to 1992 was marked by a political, social and cultural effervescence as well as the increase in struggles for redemocratization which led to the organizing of many diverse social movements. As a consequence of the search for both democratization and reorientation of mental health assistance, the social movements organized in this field played a crucial role in the emerging of new public politics in mental health. The aim of this study was to prove and determine and the origin and organization of the social movements in Mental Health in the State of São Paulo. In addition to that, to establish their influence over the new politics in the State of São Paulo and in the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform, identifying the main social movements organized in mental health in the mentioned state from 1979 to 1992, unveiling the theoretical concepts which guided those social movements and their participation in the new pathways of Mental Health politics and the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform.
