When we think about coins, the metal disc that serves as an economic tool in our current society comes to mind, but when we set out to observe these objects closely, we notice that they usually carry symbols and figures attached to their originating State. If we currently have this notion about coins, what would be the trajectory behind this artifact? Numismatics emerges as a means of reviewing the functionality of money throughout history, and to understand its role as an object of research. The proposal for this dissertation is through a determined context to search in the defined scope the possible links between the monetary iconography and the political relations of the period, that is, to trace how the religious imagery was linked to the local politics and culture, as well as being a study on currencies we can also draw the economic relations. The so-called Magna Grecia, which corresponds to present-day Southern Italy, became occupied by the Greeks from the 8th century BC onwards and issued coins in the sixth century BC, the issuance of coins is one of the factors that denotes the relevance of the region in the Mediterranean extent during the Ancient Age. When we note the development of Magna Grecia in the Pan-Hellenic context and the relationship of the Greeks with the cult of Athena, we have chosen to observe how the cult of this divinity spread in the Mediterranean by observing its representation in coins, specifically in Magna Grecia, in the fifth and fourth centuries BC, through a systematized survey presented as the fruit of this research. We will therefore discuss the region and the coins issued with Athena and / or its attributes, and how through them we can elaborate a profile of the divinity and its cult in the context, and also seek to understand its use as a coin-type, through the parallel with the local History (Magna Grecia and its polis) and of possible typological influences that circulated in Western Greece, specifically in the monetary sphere.
