Abstract in English
A new perspective of making science is being adopted by many researchers around the world, resulting in several technological achievements in many research fields. The new approach to science is largely interdisciplinary and wraps together many new methods used to analyze, store and visualize large amounts of data, as well as techniques to understand the structure of science itself. However, the problems usually handled by this new approach also are very complex and present an intricate collection of concepts and relationships. Complex networks can be used to naturally represent such systems, having being adopted by many researchers of different backgrounds. The objective of this work is to study and develop new multiscale techniques to characterize the structure of complex networks under three different aspects: dimension, regularity and the organization of systems in substructures; which are tightly related to the concept of complexity. To conduct such analysis, new measurements based on the idea of concentric levels and patterns are proposed, which permits traditional network properties to be extended to a multiscale approach. Therefore, we introduce a new measurement of dimension, the multiscale dimension, which can be used to quantify the dimension around the neighborhoods of a vertex, as well as over the entire network structure in a global scale. The regularity is considered in terms of symmetry, which is redefined to create the concentric symmetry, allowing the quantification and comparison of symmetry among networks of distinct sizes and connectivity. Another concept explored in this work is the characterization of the role of vertices inside a community, which represents the substructure organization of the underlying system. This is done by defining another multiscale measurement, in this case, based on the diversity of the communities of vertices in the neighborhoods of a central reference. Also, we developed new tools and techniques to visualize complex networks, which have proven essential to all the steps of the analysis conducted in this work, including the task of mapping the science structure. The combination of the proposed methodologies enriched the analysis and the characterization of complex networks, resulting in the development of a new way of mapping complexity based on dimension and symmetry. Systems presenting low symmetry and high dimensionality are more likely to also display a more complex behavior, this is the case of knowledge networks the infrastructure of the Internet. In this context, we also study the effects of spatial restrictions and system planning on networks. The methodologies introduced in this paper culminated in several other applications in many scientific topics, such as: the classification of genes in human transcriptome networks, crisis detection on the financial market network, visualization and automatic summarization of scientific data, as well as the quantification of interdisciplinarity of scientific journals. In general, the contributions of this work demonstrate the potential of the multiscale analysis applied to understanding complex systems through the networks representation.
