Esta pesquisa, em um primeiro momento, discorre sobre questões pertinentes ao turismo como atividade econômica, às políticas públicas de turismo desde a criação da Embratur até o atual Programa de Regionalização da Setur, à história do curso de Turismo no Brasil e no Paraná e à Geografia do Turismo sob a visão de diferentes teóricos. Em um segundo momento, com base no referencial teórico, nas entrevistas realizadas com docentes notáveis e nos questionários aplicados tanto a professores quanto a alunos, demonstram-se as deficiências e incoerências teóricometodológicas existentes na disciplina de Geografia do Turismo nas universidades e faculdades do estado do Paraná. Para finalizar, estão sendo indicadas categorias e conceitos geográficos, considerados de fundamental importância para o futuro profissional em Turismo, os quais, por si só, sugerem uma metodologia. Para mostrar a importância desses conceitos e sua aplicabilidade, foi utilizada como exemplo a Região Litorânea do Paraná.

The first part of the paper focuses on: (i) issues related to the tourism industry as an economic activity, (ii) public policy issues regarding the tourism industry from the creation of the Brazilian Tourism Agency to the present regionalization program, (iii) the history of the teaching of the undergraduate tourism course in Paraná and in Brazil and (iv) the views of different scholars on the Geography of Tourism subject. The second part of the paper demonstrates the theoretical and methodological incoherences as well as the deficiencies that are present in the teaching of the Geography of Tourism subject in the universities in the State of Paraná. Such demonstration is grounded on theoretical references, on interviews with distinguished faculty members and on the answers to questionnaires applied to both professors and students. The final part indicates geographical categories and concepts that are of fundamental importance to the students of Tourism, and that which, when considered by themselves, already suggest a methodology. The State of Paraná´s coastal region offers a case study that illustrates the importance and the applicability of the concepts indicated.
