Abstract in English
The increase in flood frequency over the last 50 years and the worsening of its impacts reveal that spacetime trends of these phenomena should be analyzed. Different sciences are dedicated to understanding floods and proposing instruments to reduce and mitigate its impacts. Geomorphology, based on geomorphological event concept and detailed geomorphological mapping, allows us to interpret the spatio-temporal flood trends and define susceptibility degrees, emphasizing the spatial component. Paleohydrology focuses on hydrological, morphosedimentary and historical data as proxies for reconstitution of paleofloods, aiming to incorporate them to intensity-frequency equations, emphasizing temporal component. The majority case studies in paleohydrology field included rivers embedded in semi-arid environments, being necessary to apply its methodology in humid tropical environment floodplains, as well as to evaluate potential collaborations between fields of knowledge to advance the understanding of the floods. This study aimed to explain the spatio-temporal trends of floods in a typical meandrical floodplain of the humid tropical environment (lower Ribeira de Iguape), under multiple analytical perspectives (fluvial geomorphology and paleoflood hydrology) and by associations between results of each analysis, emphasizing investigation of parameters and techniques of greater effectiveness to identify trends of the Holocene floods. Geomorphological research was based on the detailed geomorphological mapping of the fluvial system; while the paleohydrological research was structured in the hydrological (instrumental fluviometric data), hydraulic (hydrodynamic modeling) and paleoinundation hydrology analyzes. The geomorphological mapping indicated that the morphological diversity found implies spatially discontinuous hydraulic relations that make it impossible to establish correspondence between rating-curves values and geomorphological systems. Convergent result was obtained by associations between flood levels (hydrodynamically simulated) and geomorphological compartments in different cross sections along the studied reach. They demonstrated that complete flood of the floodplain occurs in different flow orders between four sections distributed upstream-to-downstream with 2115, 1340, 3026 and 3195m3/s. It corroborates the lack of direct association between flows and geomorphological systems. Surface materials indicated a homogeneous sedimentary structure in the backwater sediments, and laminar to wavy in the deposits closest to the channel, evidencing the capacity of energy dissipation in the entrance of flooding. The most promising fluvial systems for paleoflood hydrology analysis were those obtained in paleomeanders. Use of geochemical proxies in five cores sampled to identify vertical texture variations showed significant correlations (>0.7) between Zr/Rb and Si/Al and the ratios of fine sand over clay and silts, but only for some depositional systems. The highest correlation values of textural proxies, combined with the results of hydraulic modeling, permitted the reconstruction of Holocene paleofloods, which were incorporated into the intensity-frequency equation based on instrumental data. This resized temporal trends of floods, a result that could be incorporated into the geomorphological mapping. The multidisciplinary approaches enabled a consistent understanding of the spatial-temporal flood trends in confirming certain results, highlighting the analysis limits of each methodology and indicating how they can contribute directly to each other.
