O principal objetivo do presente trabalho é analisar a Geografia das religiões afro-brasileiras em Itu, portanto averiguar quais são os elementos determinadores da localização de terreiros destas religiões no município, tendo em vista sua inserção numa cidade com histórico de escravidão e, consequentemente, de repressão e segregação. Também verificamos, a partir dos preceitos da religião candomblé e umbanda, a importância dos lugares na natureza e/ou na cidade, como o uso religioso e representação das entidades, além da localização dos elementos religiosos dentro do terreiro. Para tanto, foram feitos levantamentos bibliográficos acerca do tema, tanto na área da geografia quanto em outras áreas das ciências humanas. A partir do arcabouço teórico foram elaboradas questões norteadoras das entrevistas, as quais em trabalho de campo foram realizadas com os dirigentes de cada centro religioso (terreiro), pois são eles os detentores de todo o conhecimento referente aos preceitos da religião, bem como determinam a localização do terreiro e dos seus elementos internos. Não houve critério específico para a escolha dos terreiros, os contatos com os dois primeiros dirigentes foram obtidos via internet e a partir deles chegamos aos subsequentes, assim, finalizamos o trabalho com dez entrevistas, sendo 4 dirigentes de candomblé e 6 de umbanda. As entrevistas foram gravadas, transcritas e por fim compuseram o último capítulo da dissertação. Os terreiros, em ritual ou não, foram fotografados a fim de localizar seus elementos internos e/ou externos. Também elaboramos um mapa de localização dos terreiros estudados nos trabalhos de campo. Nossos resultados constam no levantamento das principais características geográficas e históricas do município de Itu; na revisão conceitual de cultura e religião no âmbito da Geografia cultural, nas 10 entrevistas com mães de santo e pais de santo e na localização geográfica de elementos internos e externos aos terreiros.

This study aims to analyze the geography of the African-Brazilian religions in Itu, therefore find out which elements must influence the location of such religions in the city, in view of their inclusion in a city with a history of slavery and, consequently, repression and segregation. Beyond the location of the religions elements within the terreiros such as religious use and representation of entities, we found, from the precepts of the religion Candomblé and the religion Umbanda the importance of places in the nature and / or in the city. Thus, literature surveys were made on the subject in geography and in other areas of the humanities. From the theoretical framework guiding questions were developed for interviews with the higher priests (female mãe de santo or male pai de santo) of each religious center (terreiros), they are the keepers of all knowledge relating to religious precepts as well as determine the location of terreiros and its internal elements. There were no specific criteria for choosing the terreiros in Itu, the contacts with the first two higher priests were obtained via the Internet and from them we were indicated to the others, so we finished this part of the viii procedure with ten interviews, four higher priests of Candomble and six of Umbanda. The interviews were taped, transcribed and formed the last chapter of the dissertation. The yards, in ritual or not, were photographed in order to locate its internal and external elements. We also prepared a map location of the researched yards in the fieldworks. Our results are the survey of the main geographical features and historic city of Itu; the conceptual review of culture and religion in the area of Cultural Geography; the 10 interviews with mães de santo and pais de santo and geographic location of the internal and external to the terreiros.
