Esta pesquisa buscou retomar o conceito geográfico de rugosidade proposto por Milton Santos, de modo a torná-lo coerente com as dinâmicas desta contemporaneidade, para se compreender a partir da análise do uso do território cearense, como as rugosidades do espaço geográfico exibem os objetos passíveis de preservação, haja vista ampliarem o conhecimento e significado de memória e patrimônio, usualmente propostos pelos historiadores, arquitetos e urbanistas. A tese tem como objeto de estudo os sítios urbanos das cidades de Sobral, Viçosa do Ceará, Aracati e Icó, tombados como Patrimônios Históricos. Fez-se necessário conhecer a totalidade do território e considerar a relação entre três elementos indispensáveis que são os instrumentais teórico, empírico e técnico, e sua indissociabilidade. Desse modo, chegou-se a uma interpretação da essência do processo socioespacial, visto como remanescente, perpétuo e dinâmico, resultado concreto e ativo das relações entre sujeitos e objetos, as rugosidades fundamentam as ações das práticas políticas e sociais. Espera-se que esta pesquisa possa proporcionar um debate com outras disciplinas, especialmente aquelas que dialogam com os estudos sobre patrimônio, memória e preservação, a partir das concepções apresentadas para compreensão da rugosidade como fundamento para entender o uso do território no tempo presente.

This research aim at retaking the geographic concept of roughness proposed by Milton Santos, in order to make it coherent with the contemporaneity dynamics, with the purpose of understanding, from the analysis of the territory use from Ceará State, the way how the roughnesses of the geographic space exhibit the objects susceptible of preservation, once they expand the knowledge and meaning of memory and heritage, usually proposed by historians, architects and urban planners. The thesis aims at studying the urban sites of the following cities: Sobral, Viçosa do Ceará, Aracati and Icó, inscribed on the Historical Heritage List. It was necessary to know the totality of the territory and to consider the relation between three indispensable elements that are the theoretical, empirical and technical tools, and their inseparability. In this way, an interpretation of the essence of the socio-spatial process, seen as remnant, perpetual and dynamic, concrete and active result of the relations between subjects and objects, the roughnesses underlie the actions of the political and social practices. It is expected that that this research may provide a debate with other disciplines, especially those that dialogue with the studies on heritage, memory and preservation, from the conceptions presented in order to understand the roughness as a basis for comprehending the use of the territory in the present time.
