Este trabalho pretende investigar o contexto e a produção da Bíblia editada pelo livreiro francês Baptiste-Louis Garnier, em 1864. A obra é considerada a primeira Bíblia completa editada no Brasil, e tem como base a tradução do padre católico português Antonio Pereira de Figueiredo, acrescentada de notas do abade francês Henri Delaunay. Pretende-se situar a obra no contexto editorial da época, compreender os componentes do livro e destacar as estratégias de sua divulgação. O estudo parte de uma síntese histórica das edições da Bíblia em língua portuguesa entre os séculos XVII e XIX e sua circulação no Rio de Janeiro da primeira metade do século XIX. Busca-se, em seguida, compreender a atuação das Sociedades Bíblicas na difusão de exemplares das Escrituras por meio do trabalho missionário, assim como elucidar um conjunto de reações católicas contra a leitura de suas Bíblias. Por fim, acompanha a trajetória do editor francês Baptiste-Louis Garnier na França e no Brasil, e analisa os elementos editoriais de sua Bíblia editada em 1864.

This work intends to investigate the context and production of the Bible edited by the French editor, publisher and bookseller Baptiste-Louis Garnier in 1864. The work is considered the first complete Bible published in Brazil, and is based on the translation of the Portuguese Catholic priest Antonio Pereira de Figueiredo, added of notes by the French Abbot Henri Delaunay. It is intended to place the work in the editorial context of the time, understand the component elements of the book, and highlight the strategies for its dissemination. It begins with a presentation of editions of the Bible in Portuguese between the 17th and 19th centuries and its circulation in Rio de Janeiro in the first half of the 19th century. Then it seeks to understand the role of Bible Societies in the dissemination of copies of the Scriptures through missionary work, as well as elucidating a set of Catholic reactions against reading their Bibles. Finally, it follows the trajectory of the French publisher Baptiste-Louis Garnier in France and Brazil, and analyzes the editorial elements of his Bible published in 1864.
