Abstract in English
This dissertation discusses marriage and family in Belém (Pará, Brazil), between 1870 and 1920. This period corresponds to the development of the local rubber economy, and to an increase of population owing to national and international migration. The work analyses the relation between all these changes and marriage within different social groups, in what concerns the place of birth, the age of marriage and the legitimacy of the couple?s family. It then examines marriage and consensual union within poor families, stressing the sociability networks established by them, as well as conflicts and mutual help. Finally, the dissertation investigates elite families, especially in what concerns the transformation of wealth profile, their alliances, inheritance and dowry.
