Abstract in English
From 1972 to 1982, an entity called the Special Advisory for Security and Information (AESI) operated at the University of São Paulo within the university administration (Reitoria), which was designed to exercise political and ideological control over activities at the University. Despite the fact that these activities targeted federal institutions, Dean Miguel Reale decided to formally establish an AESI on campus in line with the guidelines of the National Information Service (SNI). The AESI-USP monitored meetings that took place on the university's premises and controlled publications distributed there. It was also responsible for interfering in the processes of hiring employees and professors and granting scholarships to students, reporting everything to the SNI, the highest level in the regime's intelligence network. Over the course of the ten years in which it operated, AESI-SP's activities generated a large volume of documents that were burned in 1982, according to statements by the chief of staff of Rector (university president) Antônio Hélio Guerra Vieira. Given its special nature, which was typical of the functioning of such agencies that corresponded with other government entities, it was possible to track down a significant portion of the material sent to or received by the AESI and retrieve these documents that permitted different forms of communication between AESI-USP and the security and intelligence agencies. Our objective was to gather, as far as possible, these correspondences and generate a search tool for future researchers in the area.
