Esta tese aborda os contextos historiográficos que enredaram a produção intelectual do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro/IHGB no período da Primeira República. Durante quase um século, a instituição foi referencial para a cultura nacional e especialmente para os estudos históricos. A fonte explorada na pesquisa foi a Revista do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro/RIHGB, nos exemplares dos anos de 1889 a 1930, analisando os discursos institucionais, relatórios e pareceres de comissões de estudos, artigos de revista e teses acadêmicas. Em decorrência da análise considero que a agremiação congregava uma comunidade científica marcada pelo signo do dissenso. No texto empreendi uma descrição da experiência historiográfica partilhada por aqueles sujeitos, destacando as disputas e as tensões pela melhor forma de operar o trabalho de escrita da história. Esta é abordada, aqui, através da orientação dada por Michel de Certeau, no último quartel do século XX: um lugar, uma prática e uma escrita.

This thesis addresses the historiographic contexts that entangled the intellectual production of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro/ IHGB in the period of the First Republic. For almost a century, the institution was a reference for national culture and especially for historical studies. The source explored in the research was the Revista do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro/RIHGB, in the copies from the years 1889 to 1930, analyzing the institutional speeches, reports and opinions of study commissions, magazine articles and academic theses. As a result of the analysis, I consider that the association brought together a scientific community marked by the sign of dissent. In the text I undertook a description of the historiographic experience shared by those subjects, highlighting the disputes and tensions over the best way to operate the work of writing history. This is approached, here, through the guidance given by Michel de Certeau, in the last quarter of the 20th century: a place, a practice and a writing.
